Water Rates Increase

The cities of Fall River and New Bedford increase their water rates to Freetown.

Dear water customer,

The Town of Freetown does not have its own source of water. The Freetown Water and Sewer Commission purchases water from the City of Fall River for our Assonet customers and from the City of New Bedford for our East Freetown customers. Yearly, both Cities increase their water rates to us.
This year is no exception.

In the past, we have tried to limit the increase we pass on to you. This year we again must increase the water rates. Effective July 1, 2021 the water rates will be as follows:
Per CCU or 749 Gallons      Quarterly Service Fee
Commercial Customers                               $7.88                                   $15.00
Residential Customers                                 $7.59                                   $15.00

Freetown Water and Sewer Commission is an exceedingly small water and sewer system. We have 690 water customers and 3 sewer customers.

Years ago, the Town voted to make the Commission and Enterprise Fund which shifted the full cost to provide water and sewer to you the customer. We are the only “department” that is also charged indirect cost that must be passed onto you. This year our indirect cost exceeds $93,000.00.

The Commission has three unpaid, elected commissioners, and two paid
employees. Our goal is to continue to strive to keep the rates you pay as low
as possible.
