Election Workers

There is nothing more important to democracy than free and fair elections. By becoming an election worker, you will help ensure that all registered voters are able to exercise their right to vote freely, without obstruction or influence.

As an Election Worker, you will work with a team, and each team member will have their own important role. Together, you will help the Town of Freetown have a successful and efficient Election Day.

Election Day poll workers receive two hours of paid training to prepare them for their assignment on Election Day, and a stipend for their day of service to our Town.

Included Election Day Worker Responsibilities

  • Help in the setup of the voting location on Election Day.
  • Prevent interference with the voting process and assists voters in accordance with the law.
  • Check voters in, hand out ballots, and direct voters to voting stations.
  • Help voters who may have difficulties voting due to sight and physical limitations.
  • Oversee the completion of forms for challenged and provisional ballots.
  • Read and record the number of ballots cast before, during, and at the close of the polls.
  • Help with various assignments required to secure the closing of the polls.

How to Become an Election Worker

The Office of the Town Clerk & Elections Department is seeking registered voters interested in serving as Election Workers as we prepare for the upcoming 2024 elections:

  • Presidential PrimaryTuesday, March 5, 2024
  • Annual Town ElectionMonday, April 1, 2024
  • Massachusetts State PrimaryExact date to be determined by State Legislature, but usually early September
  • Presidential ElectionTuesday, November 5, 2024

Qualifications

Election Workers must:

  • Be a registered voter in Massachusetts
  • Be available to work Election Day from 6 am to 9 pm (or later) - Half-day shifts are available
  • Have an email address
  • Have own means of transportation
  • Be able to assist with a variety of election-day duties

Duties/Benefits

Election Workers will receive:

  • Training - scheduled before each election
  • This is a paid position

Election workers are assigned to one of the 3 precincts at our one polling location, and may also be assigned to assist with Early Voting – locations to be determined
