The Cemetery Commissioners are volunteers who are responsible for the care and management of the town's cemeteries.  Each commissioner is elected for a term of three years.
The Cemetery Commission's primary responsibility is to manage the town's public cemeteries, which includes selling graves and overseeing maintenance.  Additionally, the Cemetery Commission is responsible for the care of veterans' graves in any cemetery for which the owners have not made other arrangements.  Commissioners also assist volunteers in determining who to contact to clean up overgrown cemeteries.
The primary public cemetery in Freetown is the Assonet Burying Ground on South Main Street.  Cemetery lots are also available in the East Freetown Cemetery on Pocasset Lane (off Chace Road).  A special area for veterans and their spouses is available in the Assonet Burying Ground, and interested persons are encouraged to ask about this area.
The Cemetery Commission does not have an office or any regular hours.  Please contact us by e-mail, or call the Town Hall for assistance.

Special Note: The Chace, Rounsevell, and White cemeteries in East Freetown are all private cemeteries operated by independent associations. The Cemetery Commission cannot sell graves in these cemeteries. All affairs in these cemeteries are conducted by their associations.
