State law requires all dog owners to obtain a license for their dog in the town dog resides in. In Freetown dogs need to be licensed by March 31st of each year. A license can issued only if the owner has evidence of a rabies vaccination which is valid as of the date of issuance. The fee for a dog that is spayred or neutered is $10.00 (documentation of spaying or neutering is required); for a dog that is not fixed the fee is $15.00.
Kennel license fees are: 5-10 dogs $60.00; 11-24 dogs $110.00; 25 or more dogs $160.00.
Licenses paid after May 31st are subject to a $5.00 late fee. Licenses not paid by July 1st will be subject to an additional $15.00 late fee. In addition, a $50.00 non-criminal violation is issued for the by-law violation if a dog is still not licensed by September 1st. Non- payment of a dog license, late fee and/or violation could result in a court summons.
Dog & Kennel Licenses may be obtained by visiting the Town Clerk's Office during normal business hours. In accordance with MA General Law, kennel licenses will not be issued by the Town Clerk's Office until the Animal Officer has completed the annual kennel inspection. All rabies vaccinations are required to be up to date before any license can be issued.
Dog licenses may also be obtained through the mail by submitting the request along with a check made payable to the Town of Freetown, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. A rabies certificate must be included if what is on file is not up to date. Kennels cannot be renewed through the mail or online.
