Highway Department

The Highway Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of roadways, storm drainage systems, sidewalks, street signs, traffic signs, traffic signals, public parking lots, school driveways, guardrails, and highway vehicles and equipment.

General maintenance responsibilities include catch basin cleaning, street sweeping, traffic markings, dead animal removal, mowing ballparks and town parks, and snowplowing and sanding.

For the approaching winter season, the Highway Department requests that all vehicles be removed from streets during snow storms to allow uninterrupted snow plowing. Snow emergencies should be reported to the Highway Department.

The Highway Department is run by the Highway Surveyor. The Highway Surveyor is an elected position with a three-year term.
